And stress, as we have learned on this show, adversely affects your health. It is always a lot worse when you are facing the adversarial situation on your own. Can having some friendly support mitigate some of the damage caused by the situation?

Dr. Karin Huffer joins us On The Commons.

A long time therapist, having watched what happens to victims of the justice system and the effects of stress they suffered, coined the term Legal Abuse Syndrome. Her book, by the same name, Legal Abuse Syndrome talks about the problem and possible remedies. She found that the key to mitigating the harmful effects of being a victim is to help each other. For the past several years she has trained volunteers to be that “support” to victims. Her new book is a revised and updated Kindle version of her first book. She has turned some of her attention to explaining, training and teaching Americans about the Americans with Disabilities Act. Americans with disabilities don’t always know they have rights or what those rights are and businesses, managers and bosses are not always aware of them either. Apparently neither are all the attorneys out there. So Karin is hard at work training them all. You can learn more and reach Dr. Huffer through her website, Equal Access Advocates.com but do tune in to listen to the amazing lady.

Podcast List for Dr. Karin Huffer

As a marriage and family therapist with over 30 years of experience, Dr. Karin Huffer identified that extreme stress caused by our adversarial courts of law exacerbates health problems and can even cause PTSD and anxiety disorders. In response, she developed a 8-step protocol tackling prevention and recovery of Legal Abuse Syndrome. “Legal Abuse Syndrome (LAS) is a psychic injury, not a mental illness – a personal injury that develops in individuals feeling hopeless due to being ineffectual in the courts.” Dr. Huffer walks us through ways to combat Legal Abuse Syndrome.

Courts cannot see invisible disabilities unless ADAAA is used. Too often opposition cruelly and unlawfully accuses those with qualifying disabilities, i.e .PTSD, TBI, depression, of being “crazy” and lying as part of a ploy. The court does not know UNLESS WE TELL THEM that for access and inclusion the PWD, person with a disability, must invoke rights to privacy, equal access, and safety under the ADAAA federal mandates.

Holistic Survival Podcast interview with Dr. Karin Huffer

As a marriage and family therapist with over 30 years of experience, Dr. Karin Huffer identified, in 1995, that extreme stress caused by our adversarial courts of law exacerbates health problems and can even cause PTSD and anxiety disorders. In response, she developed a healing 8-step protocol tackling prevention and recovery. Dr. Huffer is a trusted speaker, writer, and researcher on the topic of legal abuse syndrome and conducts webinars certifying advocates to put the protocols to work actively – right in the courtroom – to help disabled litigants that have nowhere else to turn to.

Dr. Karin Huffer clarifies and effectuates the rights of those living with invisible disabilities. EAA’s court advocates are prepared to recognize and challenge legal abuses and the syndrome that can result from extreme stress. Their education includes the use of tools for and information on conducting functional disability assessments. Classes prepare advocates to design accommodations that offset symptoms supporting litigants. The jewel in this program is the incorporation of eight steps to maintain mental health to be incorporated at the beginning, during, and end of the litigation process. Mental and physical endurance are paramount to life during and after the litigation experience.

Key Takeaways:

[1:36] What legal abuse is

[5:01] Where you need to go to request aid (hint: it’s NOT in the courtroom)

[8:10] The importance of recording your own proceedings

[11:18] How filing a motion in court for accommodations for your disability can change the whole dynamic of the case, and how to avoid that

[12:45] The number one thing you need when you go into litigation

[14:22] How the majority of Americans have been priced out of the court system in America
